UPHSD-Las Piñas College of Engineering: Lighting Up Lives through Community Engagement

On November 17-18, 2023, the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) – Las Piñas College of Engineering embarked on a remarkable journey of community engagement. This initiative, aimed at fostering relationships and promoting sustainable development, was conducted in collaboration with the UPHSD-Las Piñas Community Extension Service (CES) and other colleges under the leadership of the head of Community Extension Services, Dr. Josephine P. Dasig.

The Journey to Sitio Buktot, Lawaan, and Sigmaan

The team set out for the indigenous communities located in Sitio Buktot, Lawaan, and Sigmaan, Abra De Ilog, Occidental Mindoro. These areas, rich in culture and tradition, are home to various Indigenous Peoples families. The journey was not just a trip, but a step towards understanding the unique challenges these communities face and exploring opportunities for collaboration and growth.

The Engagement Activities

The two-day event was filled with a series of activities designed to foster a sense of community and mutual respect. The team engaged in dialogues with the local community, gaining insights into their way of life, their needs, and their aspirations. These interactions were invaluable, providing the team with a deeper understanding of the community’s dynamics and paving the way for future collaborations.

One of the highlights of the event was the donation of two solar panels to the Indigenous Peoples community. This initiative, led by the engineering students, faculty, and staff, aimed to provide a sustainable source of electricity to the community, thereby improving their quality of life and promoting sustainable development.

The Impact

The impact of this community engagement activity was profound. It served as a platform for cultural exchange, fostering mutual respect and understanding between the UPHSD-Las Piñas College of Engineering and the Indigenous Peoples families. Moreover, it highlighted the importance of community engagement in higher education, demonstrating how colleges and universities can play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable development and social responsibility.

The donation of the solar panels was a significant step towards achieving this goal. By providing a sustainable source of electricity, the team not only improved the living conditions of the Indigenous Peoples community but also demonstrated the practical applications of engineering principles, thereby inspiring the students and reinforcing their commitment to social responsibility.

Looking Ahead

The UPHSD-Las Piñas College of Engineering, along with the Community Extension Service (CES) and other colleges, remains committed to its mission of community engagement. This recent activity is just one of many initiatives aimed at fostering relationships with local communities and promoting sustainable development. As we look ahead, we are excited about the potential for future collaborations and the positive impact these initiatives will have on our communities.

In conclusion, the community engagement activity in Sitio Buktot, Lawaan, and Sigmaan was a resounding success. It served as a testament to the power of collaboration and the positive impact that colleges and universities can have when they engage with their local communities. As we move forward, we are excited about the potential for future collaborations and the positive impact these initiatives will have on our communities. We are proud to be part of this journey and look forward to continuing our mission of community engagement and sustainable development.
